    July 2008 :  Major New Project for Claxton
    Claxton Engineering Services Ltd, an Acteon company, has been awarded a contract worth in excess of £1m by leading North American natural gas producer EnCana, to supply a variety of equipment and personnel for drilling and completions operations for five wells on a high-pressure natural gas platform, offshore of Nova Scotia, in the Deep Panuke field.


    June 2008 :  Offshore Technology Conference Attendance Breaks Record
    Attendance at the world's largest offshore event, the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC), held last month in Houston, Texas, exceeded 75,000, as energy professionals from all over the world met to learn about the latest technologies in the Oil&Gas industry.

    May 2008 : UK Subsea Growth
    The UK Subsea industry market continues to grow, from £3.35bn in 2006 to £4.3bn in 2007, according to figures released recently in a survey commissioned by industry body Subsea UK.

    Aberdeen-based iicorr Ltd (part of Stork Industry Services) has announced the acquisition of specialist company Subspection Ltd. The combined expertise of the two companies will result in a new Business Division in iicorr, creating an industry leading organisation focused on subsea technical integrity and corrosion solutions. The firm expects to grow significantly over the next 18 months, with the recruitment of over 100 people anticipated. iicorr currently employs over 200 people and has offices in Aberdeen, Houston, Baku, Kuala Lumpur, Australia, Singapore, and Benelux.

    Oil BarrelMar 2008 : Oil Prices Hit New Records
    Oil Prices reached new highs on several occasions during March, ranging from $104 per barrel to a record $112. The International Energy Agency  gathered experts from the financial and oil trading industries, as well as representatives from the production and refining sectors, to discuss the current surge in crude oil prices.

    With the discovery of over 40 new offshore locations in the past few years, and a booming economy, India is poised for significant growth in the oil & gas sector. Key exploration wells have been drilled, with particular success in the Krishna Godavari basin, off the east coast. India is now firmly on the radar for many international companies.

    Jan 2008 : The Future of Energy
    The Aberdeen Association of Civil Engineers (AACE) held a seminar recently on the subject of sustainable and renewable energy. It was reported that the need for greater renewable energy sources was being driven by the increase in global oil prices, and in Scotland by the Scottish Govt. The Aberdeen Renewal Energy Group (AREG) outlined plans to make Aberdeen as well known for renewable energy as for oil & gas. Scotland reputedly has the best natural wind and tidal resources in Europe.

    Dec 2007 : OPITO Oil & Gas Academy
    UK Energy Minister Malcolm Wicks formally launched the Oil & Gas Academy recently. Working with trade bodies, government agencies, and others, the Academy will pro-actively identify opportunities, facilitate innovation, and share best practice to support the Oil&Gas industry’s learning needs. It will be the focal point for the whole industry to deliver a workforce with the necessary skills to help sustain long-term business success for the UKCS.

    HelicopterNov 2007 : Whirlybirds
    Helicopter operations began at Aberdeen Airport in 1967, linking the growing number of oil rigs to the mainland. In line with Aberdeen’s growth to become the centre of Oil & Gas in Europe, Dyce became the world’s largest commercial heliport. Figures this month show that Aberdeen Airport now handles more than 37,000 rotary wing movements per annum, carrying over 468,000 passengers. This accounts for almost half of the aircraft movements at the airport.

    Oct 2007 : Increased flights Aberdeen-Stavanger
    Eastern Airways has announced an increase in flights from twice daily to three times per day, effective on weekdays from 22 Oct 2007, to meet demand and offer more choice to business passengers travelling between Aberdeen Dyce and Stavanger Sola airports.

    AECCSept 2007 : Offshore Europe at AECC, Aberdeen
    The biennial Offshore Europe Oil & Gas Conference and Exhibition took place from 4th-7th Sept, once again attracting over 30,000 visitors from all around the world. Delegates had a bewildering array of over 1400 exhibitor stands to peruse, as this event once more lived up to its billing as one of the most important gatherings of oil & gas business people in the world.

    Aug 2007 :  Acteon Group acquire IMS and Seatronics
    Norwich-based Acteon Group has completed the acquisition from Craig Group of International Mooring Systems (IMS), Chain Corporation International, and Seatronics. Alan Duncan will head a combined IMS/ChainCo, and David Currie will continue to lead Seatronics, both reporting to Acteon VP, Bernhard Bruggaier.

    Aug 2007 : Hurricane Dean
    The coastline in the Gulf of Mexico was battered by Hurricane Dean, causing oil and gas operators to evacuate platforms and rigs and shut down production. At least 6 platforms and 3 rigs were evacuated as the force 4 hurricane (second highest category) raged through the area. Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in August and September 2005 destroyed 113 production platforms in the Gulf of Mexico.


    July 2007 : Beijing as New Oil Capital
    A Bahrain-based developer has announced a $5billion plan to build a centre for oil companies near Beijing. It is hoped the creation of a business park, business school, and research centres will attract foreign and Chinese oil and gas companies. The project requires Chinese Government approval.


    June 2007 : RBS Caledonian Challenge
    Organisers of The RBS Caledonian Challenge have joined forces with Aberdeen-based iicorr Ltd to encourage more workers from all business sectors to join their colleagues in the gruelling event.

    The walk challenges teams of three to six people to walk 54 miles along the West Highland Way, non-stop, over a 24 hour period, to raise money for The Scottish Community Foundation and their support of grassroots charities and community groups.
    iicorr has introduced a range of creative ways to involve all its personnel in the fundraising for The RBS Caledonian Challenge this year including charging a £2 fee for the parking spaces closest to the front doors!

    Ice MadenMay 2007 :   C&M Group Ice Maiden
    Earlier this year, Scottish-based C&M Group Ltd acquired a Russian ice-breaker with a view to its conversion into a multipurpose support vessel and floating hotel for 400 people. The 14,000 tonne vessel was built for the Russian Navy in 1991. The transformation work on the renamed ‘Ice Maiden’ has been progressing at the Atlantic Marine shipyard in Mobile, Alabama. It is expected to go on station in the North Sea shortly.
